After escaping the corner store, I dropped Fiona and Dylan off at their cars, and we separated to head home for some much-needed sleep. In the morning, we reconvened at our little house once more, again with coffees and pastries, though this time, we texted each other first to make sure just one person brought food.

The first thing I did upon arrival was look up any police or news reports for last night’s commotion, but I didn’t find any mention of it. It seemed no one had seen or heard it, and the people we’d fought hadn’t called it in, either, lending further credence to the idea that the store was a front for criminal activity.

When Fiona arrived, she came bearing a VHS player, and I held the door for her so she could bundle it inside without dropping it. Her backpack contained a mass of wires, and after saying a quick hello, she sat down and got to work connecting the VHS player to one of her monitors so it would actually play. The process looked like it involved a bunch of adaptors and other equipment I didn’t recognize.

Dylan was the last to arrive since he was the one who had stopped for coffee and pastries, and before we did anything else, we divvied up the food and took a moment to caffeinate ourselves.

“How’s everyone doing after last night?” I asked. “Any injuries?”

“A bit sore, a bit bruised, but nothing serious,” Dylan said. “Getting out of bed this morning was a little difficult, but it will pass with some stretches.”

“About the same,” I agreed. Upon waking up this morning, I’d discovered a nice bruise on my cheek from where my face had smacked into the metal shelf, and my hand was sore where it had stopped the pipe using the can.

Fiona nodded her agreement but didn’t take her focus off hooking the VHS player up to her monitor. A few minutes later, she had it set up to her liking, and she gestured us around as she inserted the tape into the slot. The machine thought about it for a long time. When the image came up on the screen, it was grainy and a little uneven, but it started moving when Fiona hit the fast-forward button. She moved rapidly through the hours until she neared the timestamp on Michael’s photos, then she slowed down and let it play normally. Dylan and I leaned over her shoulders to watch, coffees in hand.

After a few minutes, Michael walked into the shot and paused to check something on his phone, standing on the edge of the sidewalk across the street from the shop where he was out of the way of the other pedestrians passing by. As he looked at his phone, a man came into the shot from the direction of the store’s door, holding a large box in his hands, though his back was to the camera, hiding his face.
